IRS Form 4868

IRS Form 4868

IRS Tax Extension Form

The IRS doesn’t play around when it comes to deadlines, fees, penalties, and fraud.  They’ve increased their budget for fraud investigation and we all know you can go to jail for not paying your taxes.  They also have a reputation as a scary institution that doesn’t care about the common folk.

That’s why it’s surprising and nice to know that anyone can apply for more time to do their taxes.  IRS form 4868 is called Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return and it’s free.   It’s a simple form, and all you do is fill it out and mail it in and you get six more months to work on your federal tax return.

Here’s a link to IRS form 4868.  If you expect to owe taxes, you’ll have to make a payment by April 15.  That’s because the IRS tax extension is for the paperwork but not an extension of time to pay.  You can use your credit card to make the payment you think you’ll owe when you finally get around to filing the actual tax return (usually an IRS 1040 form for most people).
